Today, raised floors are still an important part of many data centers. But do you know why? What is the purpose of using raised floors? What is its role? The next few points will answer these questions about raised floors.

Briefly quoting the definition in DIN EN 50600, the raised floor is a system consisting of movable and interchangeable ground frames, connected by beams, and the ground frames are embedded in adjustable foundation frames. Its purpose is to provide underground space for equipment services.

Even in this era of row-level cooling, rack cooling and air handling units as the mainstream, precision air conditioning units (CRAC or CRAH) have always been the primary choice for air conditioning data centers. However, this article is not intended to explore the reasons for this, but to illustrate that elevated floors and precision air conditioning units can ensure the highest efficiency and reliability of the equipment.

In the past, raised floors masked "equipment services" such as power cables, data cables, and piping systems. It is difficult for cold air to escape from the exhaust port directly through these places. After that, a good solution was born. Now everyone knows that the main purpose of raised floors is to transfer cold air to these servers, so most of the wires are placed on the racks. The height of the raised floor ensures that the gas in the air duct has enough space to reach its destination, thereby reducing losses or drag.

If the raised floor in data center is used for air volume distribution, it must be completely sealed and leak-proof to ensure that cold air only passes through the designed route to the server and maximize its efficiency. The cable glands under the rack or at the wall connection must also be completely sealed without leakage. The elevated floor that was removed for maintenance purposes will cause an obstacle to the air volume distribution, so it is necessary to reduce this to a minimum.

The precision air conditioning unit blows cold air into the raised floor. The raised floor provides a path for the cold air flowing from the precision air conditioning unit to the server, and the server takes turns to receive the cold air provided by the opening of the raised floor. By adjusting to ensure the minimum stable overpressure on the raised floor, even if the precision air conditioning unit is shut down for maintenance reasons, the cold air supply of the raised floor of the data center should always be ensured. Only this type of air conditioner can achieve this level of reliability.

The openings on the raised floor can be intelligently controlled to ensure maximum efficiency. The adjustable windshield will adjust the opening angle through the cooling demand of the server rack. In this way, the system only needs to circulate the air volume to meet the cooling requirements of the server.

In conclusion

Raised access floor has its own significance, and when it takes on the task of air distribution in the data center, it provides many advantages of other air conditioning systems.
